Ingredients

1 teaspoon ceremonial-grade matcha powder

2 to 3 ounces hot filtered water, around 175°F (80°C), not boiling

Instructions

  1. Sift the powder: Place a small fine-mesh sieve over a matcha bowl or wide mug and press the matcha through it with a teaspoon to remove any clumps.
  2. Add warm water: Pour 2 to 3 ounces of filtered water heated to about 175°F (80°C) over the sifted matcha.
  3. Whisk briskly: Using a bamboo whisk, whisk quickly in an M or W motion for 15 to 30 seconds until a fine layer of foam forms across the surface.
  4. Sip mindfully: Enjoy the matcha plain within about 15 minutes while the foam is fresh and the powder remains evenly suspended.

Notes

Do not use boiling water because excessive heat can make matcha taste more bitter.

A bamboo whisk, or chasen, produces the smoothest texture and finest foam.

If you are sensitive to caffeine, start with 1/2 teaspoon of matcha and avoid drinking it late in the day.

This drink is not intended to replace a balanced meal or serve as a weight-loss treatment.

For the best flavor and texture, enjoy it immediately after whisking.
